The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Writing a Novel Date: 02 March, 2004 — $12.32 — Book Rating: |
Hmm, just messing around a bit actually, wanted to see how this reviewing thing worked. But since I’m here…
I found this book comprehensive and coherent, the author’s tone friendly and honest, and the information invaluable. Yes, most of it I already knew. I should hope so, as I’ve completed four novels. However, I’m self-taught. The author covered things I already do in my writing, but didn’t know the name for, and mentioned a few things I knew little about.
That said, if you’re looking for grammar and punctuation, look elsewhere. Tom Monteleone assumes you can already write, or you wouldn’t be dreaming of writing a novel. But if you want to know about creating characters, pacing, plot, setting, and more, if you’d like a brief overview of genres, and some stellar suggestions on marketing your book (literary writers not interested in being paid to do what you love, look elsewhere!) this is an excellent beginning. If you supply the drive and the creativity, it may well be the only book you need.
