In the grand scheme of things, it’s really not a big deal. But it’s something that has bothered me on and off for years, and I’m going to complain now.
When you watched Sister Act (come on, you know you saw it) whose voice caught your attention? Was it Whoopi? Was it the whole choir?
Or was it Sister Mary Robert?
Wendy Makkena is the actress’ name. Wendy Makkena, with a voice that absolutely knocked my socks off. Wendy Makkena, who isn’t even credited on the first soundtrack when you search her name on Amazon.
For God’s sake, we have albums out there by–whoa, wait a minute. Stop in mid-rant, research tells me someone named Andrea Robinson did the actual singing. Not that it’s mentioned anywhere like where it should be, considering that voice is such an important part of the story…I’ve waited years to find this out? I could have been in acoustical bliss all this time?
Hmm, further research is in order.
And the results are…I can’t even find her credited on either soundtrack! Not only that, but listening to the three songs that I remember Sister Mary Robert cutting loose in the movies–in the samples I catch not a whiff of that voice. So the only way to get her voice is to order the soundtrack and hope they used the version where Mary Robert sang a lot. (In “I Will Follow Him, the finale version” which is on the soundtrack, as I recall, she does NOT.) Because apparently she has no other recordings anywhere Amazon can find.
Grr.
