Paint.net, it’s called. I forget exactly where I got it, but it was easy for me to find, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble. It’s free, and it comes without spyware or ads.
Today I mapped out my spaceship. Six decks, a hold that runs through four of them, two elevators (okay, I didn’t figure out where the elevators are exactly but I did remember there were two!) this program is a dream. (Get it? My ship is the Vagabond’s Dream, the program is a dream, get it?) (might be a little punch-drunk here, I’ve never used a drawing program so extensively before.)
My picture has 10 layers to it so far. The layers are transparent, and hide-able, so I can have, say, decks Delta, Echo and Foxtrot only showing, and see how the ship looks from below. Since Delta is the largest deck, it’s also there when I want a top view, of decks Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta. Or I can take everything off but Deck Alpha and the Alpha interior layer, to find where I put who’s cabin, so I don’t screw that up. It’s already created one great idea, an extra room for Taro’s book that will make a difference.
I plan to map it all out eventually, as I re-write and edit and remember where things are. Though I don’t really expect the equivalent of The Nit-Pickers’ Guide to KD’s writing, there’s no sense in giving any critics ammo, right?
Besides, it generates plot ideas and otherwise wastes hours. What more could you want?
I categorically deny spending an hour cutting and pasting an official piece of Weiss Kreuz artwork to make what looks like a romantic picture of two characters who are not together in the show, but are in my fanfics. (but if you ask me nicely, I might send you one I *cough* stumbled over *cough* 😉
