Want to know the really annoying thing about when it’s hard to write? No, it’s not the difficulty. It’s that there are two main reasons something is hard to write. (beyond the obvious ones–computer being obnoxious, no time, kid playing Ricochet, headache, etc.)
One reason something might be really hard to write–it sucks. Bigtime. And you’re so caught up in forcing it you can’t see that it sucks. But you keep forcing it, because of the other possible reason it’s really hard.
Reason two would be that it’s really good. Deep and gut-wrenching and you’d rather memorize the ingredients in your shampoo than write, it’s that painful.
And when it’s all done, and you’ve hammered it out, three thousand plus words, and you look at it and you can’t tell if it was so hard because it’s really good or because it sucks?
That really bites.
Please don’t mind the slang. Schu and I have the same attitude lately (if you know Schuldig you’ll know how that worries me) and so my language is sliding even more towards my writing than it usually does.
