Saw two awesome movies last night…
Let me just say, I like a good action movie. I want a ride when I sit down to watch a flick. So I’m accustomed to checking my brain at the door and getting rocked for an hour and a half, but the joy doesn’t last.
Not so with the Bourne films. During the Bourne Identity, my brain was as occupied as the rest of me. The writing, the acting, the filming–all came together into one heck of a movie. (and you haven’t lived till you’ve seen a chase scene with a mini-Cooper as the getaway car )
Then they did it again–the sequel, the Bourne Supremacy, was just as good.
The characters are detailed, the dialogue was far more than snappy comebacks, and the plot rocked along like a good action plot should–plenty of mystery (for one, like me, who never looks too far ahead, at least) but not incomprehensible, and even when I Figured It Out, I waited happily for Jason Bourne to Take Care Of It.
Matt Damon makes an excellent Bourne. He is not an Action Hero, and that’s one reason I love these movies. They are not all about bigger, better explosions, car chases, et cetera. I don’t think I even saw a single corner fruit stand get demolished!
These aren’t Bond movies, either. Bourne gets dirty, fights dirty, and doesn’t have gadgets or ritzy cars or any of it. He’s just a guy. And it’s so cool.
The same way Scream rose above slasher pics, Bourne rises above all the other action I’ve seen. These movies blew me away.
I will be bouncing eagerly in my seat, waiting for the Bourne Ultimatum to rock my socks AND my brain August 3.
And in the meantime, I’ll track down the books.
Oh, and here:
