Alter-Egos and Theme Songs

Today I gave up downloading from WalMart.com, and turned to Napster. For $0.11 more, I might (haven’t tried it yet, but I have faith) be able to burn my paid-for songs to a cd I can take to work. It didn’t work with WalMart, not to mention once it was four days before I could get my songs, since they didn’t stop selling the damn things while their server was down and they were unable to deliver…

Napster Light, it’s called, when you just buy what you want. It’s there, if you look carefully. They’d much rather sell you the “Unlimited! Listen all you want! 5,000 Radio Stations or Make Your Own! Downloads for 80 cents for members!” for $10 a month. But I only buy what I love, and I get ‘my’ station free from Yahoo. I’ve been fine-tuning it for months now. Takes an internet giant to have a chance at figuring out my tastes, let me tell you…

I mean, come on. Guns ‘N’ Roses and Garth Brooks and Metallica and the BeeGees and–gasp!–I love that one and only song by Tiffany, “I Think We’re Alone Now.” Yes, I’m aware it’s a remake. I like Tiffany’s version. And do you remember “Hot Rod Hearts” by Robbie Dupree? I do.

So far I like Napster itself, though. A lot more songs to choose from, and the player isn’t glitching like the one that came with my computer did. (ever since I downloaded the upgrade, in order to play songs downloaded from WalMart. I tell you, it’s a conspiracy.)

Today I got my theme songs. The ones I never bought on CD (I’m cheap, won’t buy a whole CD for one song), but that play in my head anyway. The soundtrack of my inner life, if you will. Be afraid.

Right now I’m listening to Don Henley, with Axl Rose singing back-up, “I Will Not Go Quietly.” Yeah, you can guess that one would be mine. Bet you can’t guess the next one. Give you a hint, it always makes me think of Bill Murray. Blowing up gophers.

Did you guess Kenny Loggins’ “I’m Alright?” *grin* Another of my ‘guys’ likes the Stones’ “Paint It Black.” And there’s “Runaway Train” by Soul Asylum. “Proud,” by Heather Small. Apparently it’s from Queer as Folk, but I heard it surfing for anime videos, and loved it. That’s fine, it fits with the general weirdness of my list.

“Poison” by Alice Cooper. “Close My Eyes Forever” by Ozzy and Lita Ford. “Shut Up and Drive” by Chely Wright. What a song. And another awesome one, “Desperado.” The original, thank you very much. And four songs by Melissa Etheridge, because sexual preferences aside that woman’s voice and lyrics get me. (Yes, apparently sexual preference does matter. People always tell me she’s a lesbian if I mention I like her music. My standard response is that she hasn’t asked me out yet, but I’ll be careful. Might be contagious, after all. 😉 And one I bet you isn’t on Napster, but I have the CD–“Shadow Lover” by Mercedes Lackey (Read the Last Herald-Mage! I command you!) and sung by Heather Alexander. What a haunting song!

But my all-time favorite? You’d never guess it in a million years. Ooh, here it is! Gotta turn it up… “Southern Cross” by Crosby, Stills and Nash. Don’t ask why, I can’t tell you. But I have always loved that song, it has been my favorite for at least ten years. And that’s a conservative estimate.

Anyways. I got my soundtrack, my manuscript is on its way to New York, and this morning my wonderful brother and sis-in-law kidnaped the munchkin for a couple glorious hours. I started slow, reveling in no interruptions as I enjoyed a cup of coffee then checked my email and thought about writing, then realized–I can throw stuff away! And away I threw. Broken stuff, “I want that stuff” that hasn’t been missed in the month it’s been on the floor in my room, a shredded bed canopy more tatters than butterflies…

Joy, I tell you. My house looks better than it has in ages, once I got the floor space clear I could sweep (light-colored linoleum requires a lot of sweeping, to not look bad!) and I did laundry until the blasted machine broke again (not mine, it’s a laundry-room rental) and I dug out the insurance enrollment crap I gotta get done, and planned for dinner so we actually ate prepared, healthy food tonight, and what the heck, I lit the candles and we enjoyed a lovely peaceful meal. Cool, ne?

Ooh, I wonder if I can get songs from Les Miserables? Nah, better to just buy the CD. Hmm…the every-last-word-of-the-entire-show CD set, or the Original Broadway Cast, with artists I like better? Tough choice. Wish I could get a recording with the actress who played Eponine the first time I saw it. My God that voice…

And ooh–do you suppose Napster has anything by that girl who played Mary Robert in Sister Act? Another incredible voice…

Enough. It’s time for bed. In my hell-of-a-lot-neater-house than I woke up to, thanks D and M. Love you!
