I wrote this when I stumbled on it, and didn’t even think about it being Coming Out Day today. I’m certainly not in opposition to Coming Out Day–this is just another side of a complicated issue. We now rejoin our rant, already in progress–
Besides being one of the bigger personalities in figure skating, Weir has gained notice for denying he was gay, telling a blog “I don’t feel the need to express my sexual being because it’s not part of my sport and it’s private. I can sleep with whomever I choose and it doesn’t affect what I’m doing on the ice, so speculation is speculation.”
via Johnny Weir — Zimbio.
For the record? This is a “none of your damned business.” Which policy he actually does have a right to maintain.
I’m not sure even gays have a right to be mad if he doesn’t want to make a definite statement, but at least for them it’s a matter of seeking their basic human rights. I can understand why they’d want him to speak out.
I am absolutely damn sure that no one else should give a rat’s ass who Johnny Weir wouldn’t toss out of his bed. (Unless they honestly have a chance of being the lucky one landing in that bed. Then it becomes personal. And I do mean lucky–have you seen that man move? Haw-awt!)
Well, so much for a dignified rant. 😉
To all those Coming Out today, to those already out, to those not quite ready who may never be–God bless. I wish you joy and safety and acceptance, and I wish for all of us a day when Coming Out Day is celebrated as a no-longer-needed part of our history.
