Rachelle Gardner commented on her blog about the age-old question of whether agents hate writers. The usual internet shit-storm erupted, of course, although most people who bother to read an agent’s blog are there to learn, and show respect. Some commenters, though, echoed a refrain I’ve heard so many times. And I’ve just got to say Enough!
Writers who read agent’s blogs are not foolish sycophants. We know we want to get in on a business, and so we listen to those already in the business to learn what we need to know.
Agents don’t “whine” about overwork. Oh, sure, probably over a few drinks with other agents, but not on any blog I’ve ever read. That is only mentioned in defense. As in, some damned fool started ragging on one agent for all the “crimes” of every agent everywhere…
Look, people. It’s a business. Don’t like it? Don’t get in the business. It’s pretty easy. Take your bitterness somewhere else. A nasty comment on a blog never changed an industry. Especially a nasty anonymous comment.
Learn from John Hancock, people. If you wanna change the world, you’ve at least got to sign your declaration.
