From here, except the parts which are mine, and I think they’re pretty obvious.Merriam-Webster’s Words of the Year 2005
Based on your online lookups, the #1 Word of the Year for 2005 was: integrity
Hmm. Wonder why?
1 : firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values : INCORRUPTIBILITY
2 : an unimpaired condition : SOUNDNESS
3 : the quality or state of being complete or undivided : COMPLETENESS
synonym see HONESTY
I’d love to see some honesty.
2. refugee—okay, Katrina made it important to know if that was actually insulting. News flash, someone seeking refuge is a refugee. It’s not a reflection on the person, if you’d been in New Orleans, you’d be seeking refuge too. This PC crap is out of hand.
3. contempt—self-explanatory, ne?
4. filibuster—this, also, I can understand the need for.
5. insipid—Um, can you use it in a sentence? No, I don’t think I will after all.
6. tsunami—well, if you forgot your Earth Science already…
7. pandemic—Biology, folks, this one was covered in Biology.
8. conclave—Nope, don’t know anyone who would have been holding private meetings or secret assemblies…
9. levee—that’s them things that broke. That everybody blamed everybody else for while the mayor of New Orleans swore (not that I blame him) and people died.
10. inept—uh, do you really need an example of this one?
