Last night, at about three in the morning, I woke up to thunder. Rain was pouring down on the house, rattling on the cooler…the scent filled my little home and it was glorious. I must have lain awake an hour listening before it finally moved on and I went back to sleep.
This morning the local news reported that some areas received as much as eight tenths on an inch. Here in the desert, that’s big news. Especially when it was the first measurable rain in 81 days.
81 days. I grew up in Pennsylvania. It rains every other day if not more. I can’t quite comprehend 81 days even though I was here for every one of them. It’s not even a record–apparently it’s tied for the 4th longest no-rain streak since they started keeping track.
The last time we had measurable rain was April 9th. You’re damn straight I woke up and enjoyed last night’s storm.
Here’s hoping we get another soon.
It’s a strange thing, isn’t it, to be rain-free for so long when you’re used to being able to shower on your front lawn if the mood strikes you. I’m in Vancouver, B.C. where we love to piss and moan about how much it rains–but I secretly love it.
I’m glad you finally got your rainstorm.
It is weird. People will plan outdoor things a month out and I still think “what will you do if it rains? Oh, wait…”
Thanks! I’m relieved. It’s the monsoon, and we should be getting storms every few days, but it was starting to look like we wouldn’t get a monsoon this year. Not to mention…I just really need watering now and then.
Yay for rain! Clearly this is why you were tired early last night – your body knew you’d be awake enjoying the rain. 😉
Clearly. 😀
