Creating a Website: The Missing Manual

First, let me mention I got to blog today over at Turtleduck Press about why I write space opera.

Now for the review!

The slogan for the Missing Manual books is “the book that should have come in the box.” It’s a great slogan. It’s completely true, at least in my limited experience.

I’m reading this book right now, and I love it. Ever wished you could take a computers course just to get the stuff you didn’t catch when you were teaching yourself? Ever wished for all the information in one place, ZOMG?

That’s this book (so far.) I’ve learned a bit of HTML. I’ve had FTP explained to me. I’ve used FTP, you understand, but I didn’t know anything about it. I’m the girl who likes to know a bit of how things work, so when they don’t work I can maybe figure out why.

Today I was reading about web hosting requirements, and was glad I’d gone with the smaller package with my host. Then I was reading about XHTML editors, and deciding which of the free ones discussed I would get. Then I was pondering what I would do with my new skills.

I can’t wait to get going. I love my site, but I want it to be so much more than it is. This book makes me feel like I can handle that, whatever I come up with.
