Our Journey Begins!

Before the horror fades into fond memories of adventure, let me warn you off going Greyhound if you can possibly avoid it.

We were to leave at ten a.m. June 5. The bus we were to get on, however, broke down, and they just canceled that route. We waited until almost two in the afternoon to get on a different bus.

Being four hours behind schedule meant we missed our connection where we were supposed to change buses in Dallas. We sat in that station for seven hours. Then they crammed us onto a bus that was already pretty full of unhappy people, so that was fun.

Somewhere in Texas we got stopped by Border Patrol. The luggage was searched by dogs, everyone had to show ID, and two people were taken off the bus. One in handcuffs. That took an hour and a half.

In Tallahassee, Florida, we sat for two hours because they had the bus we needed, but no driver.

The food in the bus stations is, no surprise, terribly expensive. It’s also not terribly good. We’d stop for rest breaks, generally at convenience stores or fast-food restaurants, but if we were behind schedule–which we pretty much always were–it would be a short break of maybe ten minutes while 30+ people tried to order and get food and also use a restroom that wasn’t a port-a-potty on wheels and get back on the bus before they got left and it was just awful.

On the way back we were running forty minutes behind for no reason I could see (left on time, didn’t get stopped, all that) and then we got stuck behind a fatal accident on an Alabama freeway at about four in the morning. Apparently in Alabama they just let you sit there for hours rather than attempt to reroute traffic. Who knew?

In Dallas they rerouted us again, but this time the bus was leaving in a few minutes and I was worried the service lady wouldn’t get us our tickets fast enough so we could get on the bus.

Somewhere in Texas a lady who had been stuck in Shreveport, LA for twenty-four hours because they kept booking her onto full buses found out her mother had died. She would have been at her mother’s side, if not for Shreveport.

Kind of puts our adventure in perspective.

Don’t go Greyhound.

Pictures!

First picture of the trip! These mountains are in New Mexico or possibly still in Arizona, how am I to know?
I know, more rocks. What is it with me and pictures of rocks?
I asked her to smile. First picture of her outside the state of Arizona! (Lordsburg, NM, McDonald’s)
Selfies on the bus. Onward to adventure!
How the roomie spent the journey, when she wasn’t joining me in near-fruitless attempts to take good pictures through bus windows.

More soon! You might guess I have a few pics, and they need sorting.

  1. I wouldn’t’ve survived that trick. I get car-sick/bus-sick if I read, play games, or watch movies in a car/bus.

    1. Yeah, that’s the main reason for all my attempts at picture-taking. Though I did have a couple audiobooks on my MP3 player, mostly I slept or took pictures.
